Biography
John first arrived in Idaho Falls as an ensign in the US Navy nuclear power program in 1987. Having grown up in the midwest, he immediately fell in love with the mountains and high-desert plain of this area. After his sea tour aboard the submarine USS George C. Marshall (SSBN 654 Gold), he sought out the opportunity to return to Idaho Falls as an instructor, and later the Senior Officer at the S5G nuclear prototype plant at the Naval Reactors Facility.
John left the Navy in 1993, joining the local engineering firm SCIENTECH, where he served as a field chemist for the site's unexploded ordnance project. He continued at the company in various capacities, including nuclear safety, environmental remediation and management at the company's radiological laboratories. He supervised the decomissioning and decontamination of a high-radiation laboratory in Maryland, then returned to Idaho as Environmental Manager for the Bunker Hill Superfund Project in Kellogg, where he oversaw personnel and site monitoring during the removal of dozens of buildings and two 680+ foot concrete stacks. In 1996, he jumped at the chance to come back to Idaho Falls as the General Manager of NUS Instruments, a manufacturer of replacment electronics for nuclear power plants. John's last two years at SCIENTECH were spent as Program Manager for the company's Telecommunication division, where he managed the design, construction and installation of cell tower networks in the East and Midwest.
In 2001, John struck out on his own as a consultant in telecommunications, nuclear safety, and environmental remediation with clients in Idaho and throughout the US.
John is also a computer programmer, and has been the recipient of seven consecutive MVP awards from Microsoft for expertise in Office applications and automation.
John was married for sixteen years, and has two sons. Gavin attends Kenyon College, and Duncan is a sophomore at Idaho Falls High School.
